Felicity de Somerville is a Clinical Nurse Consultant with 18 years’ experience in healthcare specialising in gerontology, palliative care, education and leadership.
I began my career at the young age of 16 working in aged care facilities as a kitchen hand, laundress, lifestyle assistant and upon completion of my certificate IV in aged care at 18 worked as a PCA for the next 10 years while completing further studies including my Bachelor of Nursing at Monash University
Working in the Aged Care industry, I recognised the need for well-educated staff and strong leadership and hence completed a Masters of Nursing with a double major in Education and Leadership and Management through James Cook University, with a vision to translate the knowledge gained into my nursing practice and help develop the skills of my nursing teams.
My clinical skills revolve around aged care, community care and the speciality of palliative care. Previous experiences include working as a Clinical Manager and Coordinator in both aged care and community settings.
These skills empower my clients giving them choice over their own health outcomes. I am a firm believer that my clients must be the driver to their care through encouraging autonomy, dignity and independence where ever possible. I have worked closely in the past with advocates from OPAN (Older Peoples Advocacy Network) to ensure consumer rights and wishes were at the forefront of decision making for their careplaning.
